Introduction

Composer, writer on music, and librarian at the Paris Conservatoire, Julien Tiersot wrote extensively on Berlioz and his music. His contribution to Berlioz studies is discussed in general terms on a separate page on this site; the present page is devoted to the long series of articles on Berlioz, some 127 in all, which he published in Paris in the weekly journal Le Ménestrel between 1904 and 1911.

The majority of these (117) were grouped under the general title of Berlioziana and appeared between 1904 and 1911, except for a two year gap in the series in 1907 and 1908. Each article had a subtitle which would indicate its specific subject matter. The main batch of Berlioziana of 1904-6 dealt in detail with virtually all of Berlioz’s known musical works, published and unpublished, complete and unfinished; it thus complemented the book published by Tiersot in 1904. The final group of Berlioziana articles between 1909 and 1911 reviewed at length Berlioz’s career as conductor and organiser of concerts. Outside the large Berlioziana series Tiersot contributed several more articles on Berlioz, 10 in all, published between 1909 and 1911.

All the articles published by Tiersot in Le Ménestrel between 1904 and 1911 are listed below in two tables. The first table lists the articles in chronological order of their original publication, and the second table groups them together according to the topics they cover; for ease of reference the topics have been numbered. The reader will thus be able to see at a glance the range of subjects covered by Tiersot and the magnitude of the task he accomplished.

The texts have been transcribed by us from the images of the original issues of the journal available on the website of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris.  We have preserved the original spelling and syntax but corrected obvious type-setting errors. Two further points should be noted: (1) The typography of the originals is frequently inconsistent in its use of italics for the titles of musical works (for example the article Le Ménestrel of 17/9/1905 has the title ‘OUVERTURE DE WAVERLEY’ while the next one gives ‘OUVERTURES DES FRANCS-JUGES, DU ROI LEAR ET DU CARNAVAL ROMAIN’). In the tables below all italics have been removed for consistency, though the transcription of individual articles will attempt to reproduce the typography of the originals. (2) In the course of his articles Tiersot makes frequent use of Berlioz’s correspondence; where he cites particular passages from individual letters we have added references to the numbering of the composer’s correspondence in Correspondance Générale (abbreviated CG followed by the number of the letter).
