As you may know, the eminent Berlioz scholar Michael Wright has written a seminal book, now out of print, entitled, A Berlioz Bibliography: Critical writings on Hector Berlioz from 1825 to 1986, published in 1987 (Farnborough: St Michael’s Abbey Press, ISBN 0-907077). This book has a section devoted to the year 1903. We are grateful to Michael Wright for giving us permission to reproduce this section of his book here. All rights of reproduction are reserved and remain with Mr Wright.
The year of the centenary of Berlioz’s birth produced a spate of writing, not all of it remarkable. In the same issue of a journal serious discussion of his work can often be found side by side with notes and gossip, celebrations and speeches. In the following section certain groups of articles found close neighbours in the run of a single magazine (e.g. in special Berlioz numbers) have been treated together. Where this happens, and it is inconvenient to divorce the more ephemeral article from the purely critical, the ephemeral has been included, the whole being allotted one number, and considered as one item.
The following work, LE LIVRE D’OR DU CENTENAIRE D’HECTOR BERLIOZ, with no date of publication given, has a Preface dated 1906, and was probably published the next year. Since, however, it consists largely of articles written in 1903, it is included here out of strict chronological order of publication. Full details are given.
