Stamps

Semper Opera House in Dresden

In his two visits to Dresden in 1843 and 1854 Berlioz gave concerts at the Semper Opera House. That building was destroyed by fire in 1869 and was replaced by anew building which opened in 1878. The second Semper Opera was destroyed by British and US bombing in February 1945 the opera was rebuilt almost the same as the previous building and reopened on 13 February 1985. The above stamp issued in 1985 commemorate the destruction and marks the rebirth of the new Opera. 

Berlin State Opera House

In April 1843 Berlioz gave two concert at the Opera House in Berlin and in June 1847 he conducted a performance of La Damnation of Faust there. The above stamp was issued in 1992 to mark the 250the anniversary of the Berlin State Opera.

Baden-Baden Theatre

Berlioz conducted the première of his last opera Béatrice et Bénédict at this theatre on 9 August 1862.  See also a full account of Berlioz concerts in Baden-Baden. The above Royal Copenhagen plate was issued in 1976.

The Gürzenich in Cologne

Diameter 25cm

Berlioz visited Cologne in 1867 on his friend Ferdinand Hiller’s invitation to give a concert at the Gürzenich.
