Berlioz’s photos and portraits

    The above is a 60cm x 40cm poster published by the Musée Hector Berlioz.

 

    The bust on this old postcard could have been inspired by the 1860 photograph by Nadar. There is no information on the back of the card about its subject, date and place of publication.

    The original of this drawing is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, UK.

    Copies of this portrait are in the Louvre Museum, Paris and the Musée Hector Berlioz. Berlioz was elected member of the Institut de France on 21 June 1856.

 

    The above engraving, after an 1861 photo by Carjat, has been scanned from Adolphe Jullien’s biography of Berlioz, Hector Berlioz, sa vie et ses œuvres (Paris, 1888), in our collection. 

 

    This 1862 engraving was published in the Illustrazione Popolare in 1890, a copy of which is in our collection.

    This photograph is rarely reproduced, and no source goes further than saying: “Collection Sirot”. Sirot was a photographer who had a large collection of ancient clichés by Nadar and many others.

    This copy is in the Bibliothèque Municipale de Grenoble. We are most grateful to Madame Sylvie Crouzet, Directrice-adjointe de la Bibliothèque d’étude, Bibliothèque Municipale, for sending us an electronic copy of the photo.

 

    This engraving from the photo taken by Pierre Petit was made by T. Johnson, and published in the December 1893 issue of the Century Monthly Magazine, a copy of which is in our collection. The engraving accompanied the personal reminiscences of Berlioz’s friend Ernest Reyer, reproduced on this site.

    The original copy of this portrait was on display at the Berlioz exhibition – Opéra Garnier, from 14 October 2003 to 18 January 2004.

 

1863 – lithograph by Fuhn after the photo by Pierre Petit

    This lithograph has been scanned from a 19th century book in our collection. It bears the last few lines of Berlioz’s Mémoires and his signature, both in his own hand-writing.
