The image below is the first page of an inventory in Berlioz’s hand (18 pages in all) which draws up a numbered list of ‘the most capable artist musicians of Paris’. This document is kept in the Hector Berlioz Museum at La Côte-Saint-André. The list is organised in groups: strings, wind, brass, timpani, percussion, harps and ‘musician pianists capable of making themselves useful in the orchestra’. Altogether there are 66 violin players, 22 violas, 35 cellos, 26 double-basses, 12 flutes, 10 oboes, 12 clarinets, 14 bassoons, 20 horns, 10 trumpets, 10 cornets, 15 trombones, 3 ophicleids, 2 tubas, 15 timpanists, a few percussion players, 19 harps and 7 pianists. The list is undated, but probably belongs to the 1840s. A number of players who were members of the orchestra of the Société Philharmonique in 1850 and 1851 can be found there.
