Down from the slopes of Haut Meylan, in the modern part of the town, lies the Maison de la Musique, in front of which is found the present Berlioz monument. It was erected in 2003 to celebrate the bicentenary of Berlioz’s birth; it also commemorates Berlioz’s friendship with Estelle Dubœuf. It was created, at the request of the town of Meylan, by the atelier of sculptors Art’Issime, after an original model by Daniel Chausse, and inaugurated on 11 December 2003. The base of the monument is that of the 1903 statue of Berlioz in Grenoble, which was dismantled and melted down by the Germans in 1943 when they occupied the city in the course of the 1939-1945 war. The base was saved and kept in a museum in the town of La Tronche near Grenoble and was subsequently donated to Meylan to be used as part of the Berlioz monument.

The park behind the monument is the Parc du Bachais, in the modern part of Meylan. The Maison de la Musique is a few yards away in front of it. Details of the events organised to celebrate Berlioz’s Bicentenary in Meylan and at the Maison de la Musique are given elsewhere on this site.
