Die Konzerte, die hier ab 1781 stattfanden,
wurden Gewandhauskonzerte genannt, und ihr Orchester wurde als
Gewandhausorchester berühmt. 
Der Konzertsaal hatte eine exzellente Akustik. Johann Adam Hiller war der erste
Gewandhaus-Musikdirektor. Später wirkte unter anderem Felix Mendelssohn
Bartholdy in diesem Amt. 1894 wurde der Bau abgebrochen und an seiner Stelle das städtische Kaufhaus
errichtet.

The concerts which took place here from
1781 onwards were called Gewandhaus-concerts, and the orchestra became famous as
the Gewandaus-orchestra. The concert hall had an excellent acoustic. Johann Adam Hiller was the first
Musical Director of the Gewandhaus. Later Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was one of
those to hold this post. In 1894 the building was demolished and in its place the city’s department
store was built.
